How Do I Love My Husband?
My blogging buddy Betty tagged me with a sort of award/meme and it is perfect for me and will be an easy to write post. Here is what I got:
How do I love my husband, let me count the ways….Sorry, I started to wax poetically there for a brief second. I think this should be “Why do I love my husband.” I could go on and on about how over the almost 35 years we have been together he has taken care of me even when I have been a rip-snorten’ pain in the kester which anyone that knows me will tell you I can be or how he goes out of his way to do things for me. “Blah, blah, blah” I would rather tell you a story that will show you why I love my husband and always will.
Now let me preface this with a fact. Hubby has bought me flowers maybe 2-3 times since we have been together. He is not an overly romantic man. He doesn’t do cards and flowers so when I get them I about faint especially cards. I don’t get them for birthdays or Valentine’s or even on our anniversary. But that’s okay because I know he loves me and I don’t need these usual trappings. This is why:
I grew up in California and lived in Long Beach for awhile and my place was maybe 2 miles from the beach. I love the beach and the ocean. I mean I really love the ocean. It calms me like nothing else can. I used to go to the beach most days even in the winter and would just sit in the sand and watch the waves coming in to shore, listening to them and the sound of sea gulls while feeling the breeze and smelling the tangy, salty air. I would be transfixed within moments and all my cares and worries were gone for that brief time.
Then I met my husband-to-be, dating/living together ensues, we marry then OMG!! he wants us to move back to his home state of….Kansas! Wait…that’s no where near the ocean. Can I do this? Will I do this? Yes, I love my husband and move over 1,000 miles away to **shudder** Kansas. We have been here all of our married life and let me just say that my opinion of Kansas has not changed much from when we first arrived, I’m just used to it after all these years. But the thing I miss the most is the beaches and ocean in California. I go to lakes as much as possible to get my water fix but it just isn’t the same.
Hubby was an OTR truck driver for about 5-6 years and when he first started one of his trips was down to the gulf. When he got back he had the kids blindfold me and bring me into the living room and sit on the couch. Now they did this with much enthusiasm since they were little and this was fun. After I sat down, Hubby made sure that the blindfold was tied better and then took off my shoes. Now I am really trying to figure out what the heck is going on but haven’t got a clue. Next thing I know, Hubby is picking up my feet and putting them into a large dishpan.
Why you ask? He had stopped at the beach and found an empty water jug and box in the truck and he brought back beach sand, shells, pebbles and even ocean water. He put all of this into the dishpan so I could feel the place I love the most. He looked at my surprised face and told me “I couldn’t take you to the beach so I brought the beach to you.”
He may not bring me cards or flowers but if he can bring home a little piece of the ocean for me, then that’s okay.
