What to think about before you get a tattoo

– Have a good idea of what you want –

You don’t have to have an exact drawing or picture of what you want, that is what the tattoo artist is for, but you need to have something to base your idea for your tattoo on and reference material helps the artist to get you what you really want.

Also have a good idea where you want to place your tattoo since size of the tattoo you want will determine the best placement. A big tat won’t work on your wrist and a little one floating on the middle of your back won’t look good either, so think about size and placement. Hands, necks and faces are not a good idea and most respectable artists won’t do tats in these areas as well as not in the genital area or anything racial or gang related.

– Visit your local tattoo shops –

Do not walk into a tattoo shop and have the first available artist do your tattoo! I made that mistake on my first tattoo so I speak from experience and it was not good. Take the time to visit the shops near you and look at the artists portfolios and check out their work. Your first visit to the shops is strictly to check out the cleanliness of the shop and the tattoo artists and look at their work and maybe talk to them if their work interests you.

No reputable shop will have a problem with you walking in and asking to see portfolios, if they do – walk away! If they don’t want to talk to you (if they aren’t working on someone) – walk away!

– Once you decide on a tattoo shop and tattoo artist –

Make an appointment with your artist to visit with them and take your reference materials with you to discuss what you want and where you want it. Your tattoo artist will need time to work up your drawing, so make your appointment to get the tattoo done. When you are going to have the tattoo done your artist will show you the drawing they came up with for your approval and any needed tweaks can be done then before the stencil is made.

They will have you check the stencil for final approval so check it carefully especially if there is any wording on the stencil to make sure there is no misspellings which usually cannot be fixed after the fact.  Once you approve of the stencil it will be put on the area you have decided you wanted it. Check the placement carefully to make sure it isn’t crooked or off centered. You are ultimately  responsible if it isn’t correct because they will ask you several times if this is what you want so be sure before they ink.

– Does it hurt? –

This is always one of the first questions asked. The answer isn’t that simple because of different factors such as the location of the tattoo, your pain threshold, etc.  Now I hate shots but I have no problem with getting tattooed because it is different from getting a shot. Boney areas like your feet or ribs are going to hurt more than your arm or shoulder area. There is some pain involved but mostly it is just irritating. Some people equate it to a bee sting but I don’t think it was that bad though they hit a few touchy spots on me and that is normal. Most of it isn’t too bad except for a spot or two.

– After care –

Follow all of the instructions that the tattoo artist gives you and you should do fine. Use what ever ointment they give you as often as they tell you and keep the new tattoo area clean and you should have good results. Sun is the enemy of tattoos so if you are planning on being out in the sun all day and you tat will be exposed, please use sunscreen or your tat will fade more quickly.

The only other advice I would give is stick with more traditional styles of tattoos and don’t go for trendy icons because they might not be so meaningful ten years down the road. A tattoo that means something to you instead of just being cute has a better chance of still being something you like.

I love tattoos, good ones that is. I really love the ones I have, but sometimes you see some that you just have to wonder what the hell the person was thinking when they got their ink.

I don’t understand people getting inked with celebrity’s faces because fame is so fleeting and you might not be such a big fan ten years down the road. This one really struck me as odd.

Not all bad tats are from bad artists, some are just bad ideas, but there are a lot of bad tattoo “artists” out there so choose your artist carefully and wisely or you could end up on a blog post like this one.

Meet My New Tattoo She’s a Beauty

Any of my regular readers will  know that I am a nut for tattoos and have been for the last five years. I now have my fifth tattoo and it is my second larger one. I know, I know…

“Hi, my name is Delaney and I am a tattoo addict.”

I think there should be a support group for tattoo addicts. No, really…I do! Everyone that has one will tell you to your face that getting tattooed is very addicting. Problem is we don’t believe it when we hear this. I know I thought I would only get one, maybe two when I first seriously thought about being inked. We see how long that lasted!

I am not addicted to the discomfort of being tattooed. I could live without that and for the two that are on my wrist and inner arm, I hardly had any discomfort at all let alone downright pain. Now the two I have on my back? I earned those babies, let me tell you!

Each person is different and has different parts of the body that accept tattooing with little notice or that will peel you off the ceiling. My back below the shoulder blades is very touchy.

Nolan did my newest tat and he did the dreamcatcher as well. I love his art and he is a very gentle tattoo artist without a heavy hand. We decided to do the outlining and the black/gray shadings first, then come back in three weeks or so to finish up with the colors. That was the part that about did me in.

Here is a  picture from the initial session and yes, I am swollen and red:

Here she is finished but not healed up yet. I think that Nolan did a fantastic job and I absolutely love it! I did feel every single bit of the coloring in of the roses though and I will admit to being glad when it was over but I have a great piece of art for the discomfort.

I tell people that are thinking about getting their first tattoo to watch out because they are addicting but I know they won’t pay me any more attention than I did to the people that told me that. You learn it the hard way unless you are a total wimp and can’t handle the occasional discomfort.

My daughter tells me she will probably have to explain why one grandma has tattoos and one doesn’t but I’ll just tell her that I’m the artistic one. My daughter is predicting that before her baby is 5yrs old I will probably have a full sleeve. I laughed at that…at least initially then I thought “Hmm, that could be cool and interesting.”

See, she’s putting tattoo visions in my head and encouraging my addiction, but I still love her and apparently she still loves her “unconventional and colorful” mother. What more could a mother ask?

Tattoos: Attention Seeking or Self Expression? Part 1

If you are one of the few readers that have read this blog for very long you know I have tattoos and that I am a tattoo enthusiast. I have written several blog posts about tattoos and I even have a blog devoted to women with tattoos. Women’s Ink is my attempt to soften the stigma of women who have tattoos since this is still a major taboo for quite a few people.

A gentleman left a comment on one of my blog posts equating tattoos with graffiti and lumped everyone with tats into an “attention seeking” group as well as (basically) stating that you only see graffiti in the lower class sections of town so why would you want to do that to your body?

Okay, I want to address this one step at a time because even though this comment was over a month ago it still bothers me. Now I will state up front, I did not delete this comment but I did answer it though not as thoroughly as I would have liked to so I will with this posting.

First: Graffiti

This is what is most generally thought of as “graffiti” which to me is more “tagging” and there is a major difference. This is the type of graffiti that I believe he was referring to:

image

While this still has an artistic flair to it this is what general graffiti is seen as. This is graffiti/tagging and not artistic in the least as far as I’m concerned:

image

These are examples of actual graffiti –style art done by artists whose medium happens to be on buildings or on the street. These are not usually covered up.

image

image

This is a sampling of famous graffiti artist Banksy and I guarantee,  no one paints over his work since being tagged by him will increase the worth of the building.

image

Banksy is known as a guerilla artist and his art is usually social commentary in an art form. People even get Banksy based art tattoos:

image

image

Personally, I love the Banksy tattoos and I don’t consider his art or the tattoos as something to be  looked down upon or to dismiss it as “just graffiti” because there is a major difference between  kids with a can of spray paint and artists using a different style of canvas.

This is an example of a bad tattoo. Bad concept. Horrible execution since it’s misspelled. This is what I think of when people talk about bad tattoos with writing:

image

In part 2 I will address the issue of artistic self-expression VS attention seeking behavior.

Delaney’s World Chuckle for the Day #147

I woke up early today and decided that I am going to just look on the bright side and say “phooey” about the problems hanging over our heads. Today is a historical day and I am not gonna mope around about something I have no control over. Now is that the power of positive thinking or what? We get a new president today and Bush is finally gone so it has to get better at some point.

I promise I will not be all mopey and whine-y, I got that mostly out of my system yesterday. I have learned in my lifetime and advanced age to just take it as it comes, deal with it and do what you can do then go from there so that is what I’m gonna do. In the meantime, we all still need something to smile about and that’s my job so I’m gonna do it the best I can.

Today is a manic Tuesday so I will have a little of everything. You pick what you like and ignore what you don’t.

Tattooed at Last

Both Hubby and I got our tattoos done and let me tell you it was an experience doing it together. We got to the shop at 3pm and didn’t leave until about 2am. That was a long time at one place but the owners were fabulous and very nice people.

Cindy runs the front of the business and she once tattooed but can’t any more due to physical problems with her hand. She is a licensed piercer so she does that part of the business as well. Dean or “D” is her husband and he is the tattoo artist that worked on us and has over 20yrs experience.

Hubby went first since his tat was not going to take as long as mine to do. D could have used some standard “flash” (pre-done art) for his but he didn’t, he drew it up himself which was great. Here is Hubby and D while the work was being done.

Now while this was happening, I was out in the lobby area and Cindy put on a movie and provided sodas, just making my waiting much more pleasant which was great. She did the same for Hubby while he waited on me.

Now a word about work ethics, these folks have them. I saw a guy come in wanting an eyebrow piercing and Cindy sent him on his way after she had started to do the piercing because he was a horrible candidate for it. I guess the eyebrow is very easily infected and takes about 2 months to heal. He had no place except the middle of the brow that could be done because he has a lot of veins and no fat to pierce. Lots of places would have done it and sent him on his way. Not Cindy. She told him why she wouldn’t do it and refunded his money. Now that’s classy.

Hubby got done and they took a quick dinner break and then started on me. Now what we had originally thought was going to be about 3-4 hours actually took about 6 hours to get completely done. If I ever do a large piece done again, I might consider doing it in two stages instead of all in one. It was a bit rough on me the last 1/2 hour or so and I know that D was as happy as I was when it was done but we both hung in there and got it done.

Here are the pictures of the work in progress and when we would stop for a quick break.

We are both healing nicely with practically no scabbing or pain so thank you very much to “Doctor D” and the great job he did. If you want a custom piece at a reasonable rate then I highly recommend this place. We both really love our new tattoos and can’t wait to see how they look after the healing process is done.
