Today is a serious post on a very serious subject so please take the time to read this post. I am a participant in Bloggers Unite with Refugees United where many bloggers are writing today to make more people aware of the plight of refugees across the world. I myself just became aware of how widespread of a problem this is when I saw a special on HBO about the situation in Darfur. This is a horrific example of genocide that has been going on for way too long.
Darfur is a section of the Sudan and a civil war has been raging since 2003 and is a conflict that is ethnic and tribal between Arab and non Arabs. The Sudanese government has actually encouraged the genocide of the non Arab population and still routinely attacks the Darfur refugee camps where thousands of people including women and children are herded in like animals.
“Refugees from Darfur say that following air raids by government aircraft, the Janjaweed ride into villages on horses and camels, slaughtering men, raping women and stealing whatever they can find. Many women report being abducted by the Janjaweed and held as sex slaves for more than a week before being released. “ source
It is estimated that over 400,000 people have been killed in this conflict and that there are more than two million displaced refugees still being subjected to this horror.
These poor people are facing death from either starvation or attack from their own government as the world watches, basically helpless in stopping the atrocities occurring daily.
This is only one example of the plight of refugees. Many millions of people in other countries are displaced individuals that are starving, far from home and separated from their families.
